Pantry staples your dog can eat

At Healthy Active Pet, we’re big believers in not unnecessarily overcomplicating the way we feed our dogs (we know you have enough to keep you busy!), and we don’t think it’s necessary to spend hundreds of dollars on expensive, exotic supplements.

But it is important that we provide lots of variety in their diet and a great way to do this is through offering nutritious, doggy-safe things from your own pantry.

The recipes in our books are balanced as they are, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a little bit creative or substitute things every now and again.

These are also great additions and inspiration for the homemade treats and snacks.

The following is a list of “human foods” that you might already have on hand, or that you can purchase fairly inexpensively.

FROM THE PANTRY

Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, eggs, chia seeds, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, ginger + turmeric, wakame and other sea vegetables, spirulina, wheatgrass or supergreens blends, coconut oil, manuka honey, tahini, peanut butter, flax oil + flax seeds, sweet potato, oats, brown rice, coconut, quinoa, reishi mushroom power and other medicinal mushrooms, hemp seeds, tinned mussels and oysters, tinned sardines, salmon or mackerel, raw unsalted nuts.

FROM THE FRIDGE

Unsweetened probiotic yogurt, kefir, raw goat’s milk, sauerkraut, leafy greens + kale, broccoli, cauliflower + cauliflower leaves, pumpkin, zucchini, mushrooms, beetroot + beet greens, green beans, carrots + carrot tops, celery, cucumber, berries, bananas, mango, avocado (in small amounts), apple + pears (seeds removed), nectarines, peaches + plums, pineapple, papaya, watermelon, fresh herbs: parsley, mint + coriander.
