How much protein is in freeze dried dog food

Freeze dried dog food is an excellent way to preserve the nutrition in the dog food you feed your dog.

And the protein content will depend on the ingredients in the freeze dried dog food you are using (P.S Healthy Active Pet freeze dried dog food is high in protein)

If the company you are buying the freeze dried dog food uses lots of starchy carbs and grain (such as rice, pasta, potatoes) then the protein content will be lower. (You can also read about if you should feed your dogs potato, rice and pasta here)

How much protein in freeze dried dog food?

Most manufactures of freeze dried dog list 2 columns on their nutritional panel - one is dry matter and the other is rehydrated.

The dry matter is the number you want to look at when comparing protein as it shows the actual percentage of protein in the actual food.

The rehydrated column means if you add water and rehyrdrate the freeze dried dog food - so the protein will reduce as you are adding in water.

If you would like to compare Healthy Active Pet protein levels to a dry dog food or kibble, you must use the higher, dry matter percentage as this is the equivalent value.

Both of these values have all of the water removed from the food. Dry matter is a metric only used in pet food because there are all different kinds of pet foods (eg. Kibble, freeze dried, tinned, cooked rolls) and they all have different water contents, which makes it difficult to compare them on a percentage basis. 

So your dog’s meal might be 25g of freeze/air dried food, but then you rehydrate it with 3 parts water to replace the water that is removed when we freeze/air dry it.

This means you now have 100g of food, but 75g of it is water. Before adding water it was 50.7% protein, but now with the water it is 14.3% protein. Both versions contain 14.3g of protein, the higher % version is just a % of a smaller amount. 

This is exactly the same as comparing kibble vs wet tinned food.

“High protein” kibble is usually around 28% protein, and the wet food equivalent will be around 7% protein because it is 3/4 water.

Using this comparison, you can see that Healthy Active Pet freeze dried dog food actually has around double the protein as “premium” processed food and some of our air dried dog recipes have 3 times the amount.

This is because our recipes are designed to be species appropriate and the raw ingredients are at least 80% animal protein (from muscle meat, meaty bones and organs)
