What is the difference between air dried and freeze dried dog food
Air dried and freeze dried dog food are both forms of dehydrated dog food, but they differ in terms of the dehydration process and the resulting texture and nutritional composition (P.S at Healthy Active Pet we sell both in our shop)
-
Dehydration Process:
- Air Dried Dog Food: Air drying involves slowly removing moisture from the ingredients at low temperatures over a longer period of time. This method helps preserve the nutrients and flavors while inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The moisture content is reduced to around 10-12%.
- Freeze Dried Dog Food: Freeze drying involves freezing the ingredients and then subjecting them to a vacuum that removes the moisture through sublimation. This process converts water from a solid (ice) directly into vapour, skipping the liquid stage. The freeze drying process retains the nutritional integrity of the ingredients, and the moisture content is reduced to approximately 2-3%.
-
Texture and Rehydration:
- Air Dried Dog Food: Air dried dog food has a soft and chewy texture. It is not as hard or brittle as kibble and can be easily broken into smaller pieces. Some air dried dog food brands recommend rehydrating the food with water before serving, while others can be fed as is.
- Freeze Dried Dog Food: Freeze dried dog food has a lightweight and crispy texture. It is typically available in small, bite-sized pieces or as a powder. Before serving, freeze dried food requires rehydration by adding water. Once rehydrated, it softens and becomes similar to fresh food.
-
Nutritional Composition:
- Air Dried Dog Food: Air dried dog food retains a higher moisture content compared to freeze dried dog food. It generally contains a higher percentage of whole, raw ingredients, such as meats, fruits, and vegetables. The air drying process helps preserve the natural nutrients, enzymes, and flavors, resulting in a minimally processed product.
- Freeze Dried Dog Food: Freeze dried dog food has an extremely low moisture content due to the freeze drying process. This helps extend its shelf life without the need for preservatives. Freeze drying also helps retain the nutritional profile of the ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, and proteins.
Both air dried and freeze dried dog foods are considered highly nutritious options compared to heavily processed kibble or canned food.
They provide a convenient alternative to raw feeding while offering many of the same benefits, such as improved digestion, enhanced nutrient absorption, and reduced risk of allergies.
When choosing between air dried and freeze dried dog food, consider your dog's specific dietary needs, preferences, and any recommendations from your veterinarian. It's important to carefully read product labels and choose a reputable brand that provides complete and balanced nutrition for your canine companion.
