Cavoodles are one of the most popular dog breed - here's why

There are all kinds of “oodles’” out there in the doggie world – from Schnoodles, to Bordoodles, Labradoodles, and many more.

The much-loved Cavoodle is one of the most popular “oodles” in the world, and forms part of this special group that all share a poodle (hence the “oodle”) cross.

Cavoodle Stats: 

• Size: Small dogs
• Weight: Approximately 5-12kg
• Height: Between 25-38cm
• Lifespan: Average 12 – 15 years
• Coat: long, thick, soft coat that be curly or straight. Range of colours, including black, brown, golden and mixed

Cavoodle History:

There is some debate over the origin of the Cavoodle (also known by other names, most commonly; Cavapoos).

They may have existed in America, but are also recognised as being intentionally bred in Australia by breeders who crossed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with Poodles.

One of the goals with crossbreeding is also to minimise genetic issues that can appear in purebred dogs and pass on the benefits of each. 

In this case, breeders wanted to mix the sweet nature and mild-mannered temperament of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with the intelligence and hypoallergenic traits of the Poodle – and they succeeded!

Although the popularity of Cavoodles has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, they have actually been around since the 1950s.

Anyone who has met a Cavoodle will know first-hand just how lovely they are! They are friendly, playful nature brings a lot of joy to anyone in their presence.

Interesting Cavoodle Facts:

1. Cavoodles are hypoallergenic and low shedding – which is great news for anyone who has dog allergies or is sensitive to pet fur
2. Because of their sweet temperament and cute appearance, you might overlook the Cavoodle as a watch dogs, but actually they are very alert and you’ll know if there’s something coming around the corner or someone at your door!
3. Although most Cavapoos are a single solid colour or mix of colours, such as black, brown and golden/cream, there is also an unofficial rare colour called “Blue Merle”
4. At first glance, some Cavoodles share a resemblance with soft, plush teddy bears, and they are actually classified as part of the “toy” dog group. This is due to their size and intentional breeding for companionship, rather than working/service

Health Concerns:

Although several dog breeds can experience separation anxiety, Cavoodles in particular are known for this due to their deep emotional bonds with their owners.

They thrive on human company and interaction, so when left alone, they can stress and feel anxious, which can in turn lead to behavioural issues down the track.

It’s best to start training against this early, which may include a combination of:

• Spending short periods apart from your Cavoodle so they are familiar with this
• Keep them occupied with engaging and interactive enrichment toys
• Use calming dog specific pheromone scent sprays 
• Play calming music and videos on TV for them
• Consider a pet sitter/doggy day-care for long days away

Some other main health issues include:

• Dental issues/tooth decay: Cavoodles are prone to tartar build-up so teeth brushing and dental chews can help
• Luxating patellas: knee caps can pop out of place
• Skin allergies: cause itchiness and discomfort – there are special dog shampoos and conditioners that can assist in reducing skin sensitivities 
• Grooming: as a long-haired dog breed, Cavoodles require brushing every few days, and a more significant groom and nail trim every month or so to avoid infections and keep them looking and feeling great!

• Although they have a tendency to bark, Cavoodles are far from aggressive – in their mind they are communicating with you!

• Cavoodles are an ideal family pet due to their high suitability with children and other animals, but they are also great for singles and couples who will show them a lot of attention and playtime

• Cavoodles are known for being highly adaptable. As long as you take them for a daily walk or two, they can fit into any kind of environment, including apartment living
